Google Pay Officially Launches in Sri Lanka!

Google Pay Officially Launches in Sri Lanka Through Commercial Bank, Visa & Google Partnership

Sri Lanka is taking a significant leap towards a cashless economy with the official introduction of Google Pay, enabled by Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC in collaboration with Visa and Google. This launch marks a historic milestone as Commercial Bank becomes the first bank in Sri Lanka to offer Google Pay services for its Visa cardholders, integrated within the Google Wallet platform.

Transforming Digital Payments in Sri Lanka

This collaboration brings together the cutting-edge capabilities of Google’s digital wallet technology, Visa’s trusted global payment network, and Commercial Bank’s robust digital banking ecosystem. Together, they create a seamless, secure, and convenient payment experience for Sri Lankan consumers and businesses.

How Google Pay Works for Commercial Bank Cardholders

Visa debit and credit cardholders of Commercial Bank can now:

Add their cards directly to Google Wallet

Complete verification using a one-time password (OTP) or through call-center authentication

Make secure, contactless payments using NFC-enabled Android smartphones

Pay at any contactless-enabled Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal locally and internationally

With Google Pay, there is no need to carry physical cards or cash, allowing users to make fast and secure transactions with just a simple tap of their smartphone.

Enhanced Security with Tokenization

Security remains a priority in this digital payment revolution. Commercial Bank has partnered with IDEMIA to implement Visa Token Service (VTS), which replaces sensitive 16-digit card numbers with unique digital tokens for each transaction. This means:

Card details are never exposed to merchants

Card information is not stored on the device

Every transaction is protected with an additional layer of security

Additionally, Commercial Bank leverages the payment infrastructure of Euronet, its card switch provider, to ensure smooth and reliable transaction processing.

Phased Rollout and Future Expansion

Initially, Google Pay will be available for select Visa card ranges with plans for a broader rollout in the near future. This phased approach will ensure a smooth transition and allow more customers to enjoy the benefits of this innovative payment method over time.

Embracing a Cashless Future

The introduction of Google Pay is a defining moment in Sri Lanka’s ongoing digital transformation. It offers increased convenience, enhances trust in digital payments, and supports the country’s shift toward a modern, cashless economy.
